The 1881 Haiphong Typhoon caused approximately 300,000 fatalities in Vietnam, Typhoon Nina (1975) resulted in 171,000–220,000 deaths in China and Taiwan, and Typhoon Vera (1959) killed over 5,000 people in Japan.
