2. Dogs: ~59,000 rabies deaths: Rabies kills roughly 59,000 people a year and 99% of human cases trace to dog bites; it is nearly 100% fatal once symptoms begin.
3. Freshwater snails: the parasite carriers: Snails host the schistosomiasis parasite that infects about 250 million people, with older estimates attributing up to 200,000 deaths a year.
