While cervical cancer is historically the most recognized, Human Papillomavirus (HPV) causes several other significant cancers, with oropharyngeal cancers now surpassing cervical cancer as the most common HPV-related malignancy in the US.

Oropharyngeal Cancers as Leading HPV-Related Malignancy: Oropharyngeal cancers, affecting the back of the throat including tonsils and base of the tongue, have surpassed cervical cancer as the most common HPV-related malignancy in the United States, with over 21,000 cases annually compared to nearly 12,000 cervical cancer cases.
  2. Other Significant Cancers Caused by HPV: Beyond cervical and oropharyngeal, HPV is also a recognized cause of cancers of the vagina, vulva, penis, and anus.
  3. HPV Prevalence in Oropharyngeal Cancers: Approximately 70% to 80% of oropharyngeal cancers in the U.S. are associated with HPV, primarily HPV16, and the incidence has dramatically increased over the past two decades.
