The FDA categorizes all recalls based on the severity of health risks, ranked here from most dangerous to least urgent for consumers.

The top 3

  1. Class I: The Critical Alert: The highest priority level used for dangerous or defective products that could cause serious health problems or death, requiring immediate market withdrawal.
  2. Class II: The Temporary Risk: Applied to products that might cause a temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequence, or where the probability of serious adverse consequences is remote.
  3. Class III: The Compliance Recall: The lowest classification used for products that are unlikely to cause adverse health reactions but violate FDA regulations, such as labeling errors or minor manufacturing defects.
