Technical Mechanism of Pigment Detection

The Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) aboard the PACE satellite uses hyperspectral imaging to observe Earth’s surface across 286 spectral bands. By analyzing these wavelengths, scientists can identify subtle changes in pigments—specifically chlorophylls, carotenoids, and anthocyanins—which dictate the transition of leaf colors as trees react to shorter days and cooling temperatures.
