Bell Laboratories' 'Audrey' (1952) was the first speech recognition system, capable of recognizing spoken digits, followed by IBM's 'Shoebox' (1962) which understood 16 words, and Carnegie Mellon's 'Harpy' (1970s) that recognized entire sentences.
