Microsoft logs $3.2B from Anthropic investment, but OpenAI was a mixed bag
When Microsoft reported killer fourth-quarter earnings for its fiscal 2026 year (which ended June 30), it tucked in an interesting little tidbit about how its investments in the two biggest, and competing, AI labs are doing.

- Microsoft's Largest AI Investments: Microsoft committed approximately $13 billion to OpenAI between 2019 and 2023 and invested up to $5 billion in Anthropic in November 2025, booking a $3.2 billion gain from its Anthropic stake in Q4 fiscal 2026.
- Google's Key AI Partnerships and Investments: Google invested an additional $1 billion in Anthropic in March 2025 and partnered with Blackstone for a nearly $5 billion AI cloud infrastructure platform, aiming for 500 megawatts of data center capacity by 2027.
