NASA’s Attempt to Save the Swift Telescope Has Failed

NASA’s Swift Observatory, which studies some of the most powerful explosions in the universe, will soon burn up in the atmosphere.

The top 3

  1. Costliest Space Shuttle Disasters: The Space Shuttle Columbia disaster in 2003, which broke apart upon re-entry, cost an estimated $13 billion, while the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion in 1986, 73 seconds after liftoff, resulted in losses of approximately $5.5 billion.
  2. Infamous Software Glitches: The Mars Climate Orbiter was lost in 1999 due to a software error involving a mismatch between imperial and metric units, costing $125 million, while the Mariner 1 probe was destroyed in 1962 due to a missing hyphen in its guidance software, costing $80 million at the time.
  3. Unexpected In-Flight Anomalies: The recent mission to save the Swift Telescope failed when the rescue spacecraft, Katalyst's LINK craft, lost attitude control and entered an uncontrolled spin, making rendezvous impossible. Other notable anomalies include the "flyby anomaly" where spacecraft like Galileo experienced unexpected speed increases.
