Satellites spy penguin poop on Danger Islands | Space photo of the day for July 30, 2026

Researchers used NASA satellite imagery, along with ground observations, to track changes in the diets of penguins on Antarctica's Danger Islands.

  2. Largest Penguin Colonies by Size: Zavodovski Island hosts the world's largest known penguin colony with approximately two million Chinstrap penguins, followed by a supercolony of over 1.5 million Adélie penguins on the Danger Islands, and nearly half a million Adélie pairs at Cape Adare.
  3. Three Most Endangered Penguin Species: The African and Galápagos penguins are listed as Critically Endangered, while the Emperor penguin has recently been reclassified as Endangered due to significant population declines driven by climate change and sea-ice loss.
