Study reveals pupils most at risk of school suspension and what may help them

School suspensions are associated with a complex combination of socioeconomic disadvantage, special educational needs, peer relationships and students' experiences of school, according to new research from The University of Manchester.

The top 3

  1. Behavioral Issues: Defiance and Disruption: Subjective behaviors like defiance, disruption, insubordination, and disorderly conduct are frequently cited as reasons for suspension, accounting for nearly a third of all punishments in some states.
  2. Academic Struggles: Truancy and Disengagement: Truancy, or unexcused absence, is a common reason for suspension, which can further exacerbate academic disengagement and lower achievement for students already struggling.
  3. Socioeconomic and Demographic Disparities: Students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, Black students, male students, and those with disabilities are disproportionately more likely to be suspended, highlighting systemic inequities.
