The 100% Club: Grids That Already Run on Renewables

Iceland generates essentially 100% renewable electricity, with Costa Rica and Norway both near 99% — fully green power grids already exist.

  1. Iceland: Waterfalls and Volcanoes Power Everything: Iceland's electricity is 100% renewable — about 71% hydropower and nearly all the rest geothermal — and geothermal water heats roughly nine in ten homes.
  2. Norway: 90% Hydro and a Record-Breaking Grid: Hydropower delivers about 90% of Norway's electricity (99% renewable overall), which hit a record 157.2 TWh in 2024 — and roughly 9 in 10 new cars sold there are fully electric.
  3. Costa Rica: A Decade at ~99% Renewable: Costa Rica has run its grid at roughly 99% renewable — hydro, geothermal and wind — for about a decade (98.98% back in 2015), proving a tropical middle-income nation can do it too.
