Yale's Green Report Card: Estonia Beats 179 Countries

The 2024 Environmental Performance Index grades 180 nations on 58 indicators — Estonia is No. 1 with 75.7, and the entire top 10 is European.

The top 3

  1. Estonia: From Oil Shale to World No. 1: Estonia tops the 2024 EPI at 75.7 with the biggest 10-year score jump among the leaders (+17.6), after slashing greenhouse-gas emissions roughly 59% from 1990 levels as it moves off oil shale.
  2. An All-European Top 10: Luxembourg (75.1), Germany (74.5), Finland (73.8) and the UK (72.6) round out the top 5, with Sweden, Norway, Austria, Switzerland and Denmark completing a European sweep of all ten spots.
  3. The Fallen Champion: Denmark's Slide from 1st to 10th: Denmark, the 2022 EPI winner, dropped to 10th (67.7) in 2024 as the index tightened its climate metrics — proof the green leaderboard can flip in a single cycle.
