Human activity accounts for the overwhelming majority of wildfires, over 84%, and is responsible for more than 97% of homes threatened by fire, often due to escaped embers from burning debris or arson. While lightning is the most common natural ignition source, hot lightning, with its longer duration currents, causes the majority of natural fires.
