The first person to spacewalk was Soviet cosmonaut Aleksei Leonov on March 18, 1965. The first American spacewalker was Ed White on June 3, 1965, and the first woman to perform a spacewalk was Soviet cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya in 1984, followed by American Kathryn D. Sullivan in October 1984.
