The 1936 heat wave, occurring during the Dust Bowl, caused over 5,000 deaths and set numerous state and city record high temperatures, many of which still stand. The 1988-1989 heat wave, coinciding with an intense drought, was responsible for as many as 10,000 deaths and significant agricultural damage. The 1901 heat wave primarily affected the East Coast, leading to nearly 9,500 fatalities.
