A total penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon is fully immersed in Earth's faint outer shadow (penumbra) without entering the darker inner shadow (umbra). These are difficult to observe, often appearing as only a slight darkening of the Moon, and occur unevenly, between 0 and 9 times per century.
