Turkey battles wind-fueled wildfires on tourist coasts

Hundreds of Turkish firefighters battled Thursday to contain wind-fueled wildfires spreading near key tourist regions on the country's Mediterranean coast.

Russia consistently shows the highest average annual tree cover loss due to fires since 2000, averaging 2.6 Mha per year.

Leading Causes of Major Wildfires: Human activity accounts for the overwhelming majority of wildfires, over 84%, and is responsible for more than 97% of homes threatened by fire, often due to escaped embers from burning debris or arson. While lightning is the most common natural ignition source, hot lightning, with its longer duration currents, causes the majority of natural fires.

Regions Most Vulnerable to Climate Change Wildfires: The western and southern United States, especially California, Texas, and the Pacific Northwest, face significant and increasing wildfire risks due to climate change. The Mediterranean region, including countries like Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal, is highly vulnerable to more frequent and intense wildfires as extreme weather events increase. Siberia in Russia is also experiencing more fires due to Arctic warming, droughts, and unusually hot, dry weather.
